Predestination

Predestination is a religous concept, which describes the concepts of fate and destiny in relation to religion. Although similar, predestination is different from other ideas concerning determinism, free will, and related concepts. In particular, predestination concerns God's decision to determine ahead of time what the destiny of groups, individuals, and ultimately all of creation will be.

I think that the idea of predestination makes sense from a logical standpoint (if God is all-powerful, he should be able to decide everyone's fate), but other concepts like the Puritan work ethic don't seem like they should follow from it. If your fate is predetermined, then society shouldn't have to pressure you to do good works, because you'll reach your destiny regardless. It's actually kind of a depressing belief, if you ask me--it implies that you really have no freedom in choosing what happens to you.
